Children LOVE to work in our Alphabet Dictionary, making entries as they learn new alphabet letters and sounds, and new words! They also LOVE to learn the American Manual Alphabet Signs for all of the letters!
Did you know that learning the American Manual Alphabet Signs helps children to really learn the letter names and sounds? It provides them with a visual and kinesthetic experience that triggers their recall for letter names and sounds. Students can later use the alphabet signs to sound out words when reading and spelling.
There are two ways to use this Alphabet Dictionary:
1) Students who are just learning the alphabet letters and sounds can make entries on the alphabet page of the letter they are learning, by drawing something that starts with that sound.
2) Students who know the alphabet sounds and are learning to read and spell can make entries as they learn decodable words.
This Alphabet Dictionary, by Lil’ reading Scientists Literacy Solutions TM, contains 26 pages, one page for each letter of the alphabet. The pages are divided into 4 sections for multiple alphabet/word entries, and there is a space for letter tracing on the bottom of the page.
The Alphabet Dictionary pages have the Lil’ reading Scientists’ Keyword picture for each letter. Alphabet Keywords help students to learn and remember the letter sounds.
Example: a apple /a/
Each page also has the alphabet hand sign, as well. An Alphabet Sign Language chart is included, to put into your literacy center, for students to view.
The Lil’ Reading Scientists Literacy Solutions TM curriculum is based on the principles of the Orton Gillingham Approach!
